KABUL): President Hamid Karzai on Monday congratulated his newly-elected Indian counterpart Pranab Mukherjee and called for even closer relations between the two nations.

The Presidential Palace said during a telephonic conversation late on Sunday, Karzai congratulated Mukherjee on winning the presidency and wished him success on behalf of the Afghan people and government.

Karzai hoped bilateral relations between Delhi and Kabul would grow in strength during his presidency. On Sunday, Mukherjee, 76, was declared the winner of the presidential election, obtaining 69.31 percent of votes. He will be sworn in as 13th president of India on July 25.
