TIRINKOT (PAN fighters in the central province of Uruzgan, officials said on Wednesday.

The guards joined the insurgents on Tuesday night after having a verbal clash with foreign forces on a military base in the Kajran area of Charchino district.

Police chief for the town, Wali Dad, told Pajhwok Afghan News the guards set alight their checkpoints and defected to the militants with their weapons.

But Governor Qurban Ali said the guards were members of the NATO-funded local police force and manned two checkpoints in the area. They had joined fighters loyal to a Taliban commander, named Wali Jan, the governor added.

A rebel spokesman, Qari Yousuf Ahmadi, said they had destroyed two checkpoints in the district and detained the policemen manning them.

In Kabul media office said they had been informed about the policemen joining the militants in Uruzgan. It denied the defectors worked with the NATO-led force.

Two days ago, the Farah police chief said that a dozen policemen had defected to the fighters, but the Ministry of Interior later denied the claim. It said the policemen, who went missing, were found as a result of an operation.

Separately, one policeman was killed and a second wounded on Tuesday night as a result of a clash with the guerrillas in Tirinkot, the capital of central Uruzgan province, said the police spokesman, Farid Ahmad Ayel.
