KANDAHAR CITY (PAN): American troops have established an orphanage in the memory of a child who was overrun by a military vehicle a year and a half ago in the southern province of Kandahar.
Abu Bakar was crossing a road when he was struck by a passing convoy of US troops in the Chawni area of Kandahar City, the provincial capital.
After the incident, the American troops decided to establish an orphanage in remembrance of the three-year-old. Construction work on the project was recently completed.
The facility was inaugurated by the deputy governor and mayor on Wednesday. Mayor Mohammad Omar said the facility cost id=”mce_marker”32,000 and took a year to complete over 1400 square metres of land granted by the municipality.
Abu Bakar had accidently been killed, he said. The child’s father, Ahmad, told Pajhwok Afghan News his son was cute and smart. Abu Bakar’s baby talk continues to haunt his father to date. “I feel anguished when reminded of my son.”
