KABUL): The spy service on Friday said the suicide bombers who killed 40 people and injured 80 others in southwestern Nimroz province had come from neighbouring Iran.

A group of five suicide bombers carried out their attacks four days ago in Zaranj, the provincial capital.

A National Directorate of Security statement said that the attacks took place a day after two Iranians were killed and three others detained during an operation in the province.

It said the suicide attacks were aimed at creating chaos on the occasion of the 93rd independence anniversary of Afghanistan.

It identified the detainees as Ahmadwas Dini , Abdul Ghafoor Brahwi and Aabid Jihan belonging to Mashad city, Zabul and Balochistan provinces of Iran.

The slain Iranian included Mullah.

“When the five suicide bombers got to know that their comrades have been arrested as a result of the raid by intelligence officials, they came out of a house and carried out the attacks in the city, fearing their arrest,” the statement said.

The detainees confessed they had joined a terrorist group six months ago in cooperation with Mullah Satar, the slain bomber, it added.

The statement quoted the detainees as saying that they received initial training in Iran and then went to Pakistan for further training.
