5 killed in new Waziristan drone strikeBy Qaisar Yosufzai Aug 18, 2012 - 15:38
ISLAMABAD (PAN): As locals celebrated Eidul Fitr, a US drone killed five people in Pakistan’s troubled North Waziristan tribal region near the Afghanistan border, an official said on Saturday.
The CIA-operated drone fired two missiles on a compound in the Shuwedar village in Shawal district, considered a stronghold of Taliban and Al Qaeda linked militants.
The latest attack took place 180 kilometres west of Miranshah, the main town in the region, government official Mohammad Akbar told Pajhwok Afghan News. The identities of the dead remained unclear, he said.
Despite protests from the Pakistan government, calling drone strikes a violation of the country’s sovereignty, 200 suspected fighters have so far been killed in 25 air raids in the region this year.
