KABUL on Friday denied their involvement in the destruction of a road in southern Kandahar province, blaming residents for the damage.
On Thursday, an official and residents of the Pajnwai district accused the insurgents of damaging a newly-blacktopped ring road.
However, a statement issued from the Taliban said the road was destroyed by residents because their homes had been razed by the government to pass it through the area.
The statement said the road leading to a military base of foreign troops in the district had been constructed on land owned by residents with no compensation paid. It said the residents destroyed the road in order to reclaim their land.
Local officials on Thursday said the Panjwai ring road was destroyed at three locations by the rebels, who forced residents out of homes to take part in the action.
