KABUL): President Hamid Karzai has stressed the need for strict security measures and vetting process to prevent individuals from taking advantage of Afghan army and police uniforms to carry out “insider attacks” on international troops, his office said on Sunday.

Chairing a weekly meeting of the National Security Council (NSC) at the Presidential Palace, Karzai was briefed on recent insider attacks and security measures to protect mine projects, the statement said.

At the meeting, Afghan security officials and NATO discussed the ongoing security challenges and floated suggestions for their solution.

Voicing his concern on insider attacks, Karzai ordered security officials to adopt strict security and vetting measures in order not to let the enemies of Afghans to infiltrate Afghan forces and reach their malicious designs.

The meeting participants tasked the interior ministry with taking measures in cooperation with mines ministry to address obstacles hindering mine projects.

Chief of Army Staff, deputy interior minister, acting National Directorate of Security (NDS) head and NATO deputy commander in Afghanistan were in attendance.
