KABUL’s constitution, on Tuesday said he had no plan to contest the 2014 presidential ballot.

At a meeting with tribal elders and religious scholars from Badakhshan province, he stressed the ballot must be held in a transparent manner; otherwise the government would lose its credibility.

“I’m not a candidate for the next presidential election, because the constitution doesn’t allow me to run for a third term,” the president added.

In a statement from his office, Karzai urged the Afghans to vote for a candidate who is God-fearing, devout Muslim, with a high sense of patriotism and justice.

A parliamentarian from Badakhshan, Nilofar Ibrahimi, provincial council member Kamil Baig Hussaini and religious scholars Abdul Wahid, Mohammad Naseer and others urged a solution to their voters’ problems.

They asked the government to pay attention to the construction of water reservoirs, power dams and roads in the remote province. The public representatives also called for reopening the medical faculty and upgrading the Tagab district clinic.

Responding to the demands, the president said implementing basic projects across the country was among the government’s top priorities. He promised steps to reopen the medical faculty and provide other facilities for residents.
