SHIBERGHAN (PAN) in the northern province of Jawzjan, officials said on Friday.

Commander Mullah Taj was staying as a guest at the house of Khan Wulus in the Aqa Bai village of Qush Tepa district, where the predawn raid took place at 3am, the provincial police chief, Brig. Gen. Abdul Aziz Ghairat, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

The house was burnt as a result of the raid but civilians suffered no casualties, he said, adding the NATO-led troops had also arrested one suspected fighter.

Aminullah, the district chief, said Afghan security personnel did not participate in the operation in the area, bordering the Daulatabad district of Faryab province.

Meanwhile, an ISAF statement said Afghan and coalition forces killed numerous heavily-armed insurgents during an operation to arrest a senior Taliban leader in Daulatabad.

As security personnel reached the compound, the fighters opened fire on them, the statement said. The security force returned fire, killing the insurgents.

“The Taliban senior leader is believed to be responsible for facilitating, planning and coordinating improvised explosive device attacks against Afghan and coalition forces throughout Jawzjan province,” the statement added.

The security force also seized a cache consisting of several automatic weapons, rocket-propelled grenades, mortars, mines and IED-making materials.
