KABUL): President Hamid Karzai on Sunday directed the Ministry of Defence to strengthen the capabilities of the infantry and air force, his office said.

Karzai issued the orders at a meeting with corps commanders and high-ranking officials of the Afghan National Army (ANA), a statement from the Presidential Palace said.

Calling the defense capability vital to the country’s sovereignty, he instructed the ministry to repair its armoured vehicles, cannons and aircraft and work for enhancing the capacity of ANA officials.

Chief of Army Staff Gen. Sher Mohammad Karimi assured the president that his orders would be implemented as soon as possible. He would also submit a report on ANA priorities and needs in two weeks.
