The bomber crashed his explosives-laden van into the NDS building at 2pm, the deputy police chief, Col. Ghulam Rabbani, told Pajhwok Afghan News. He gave no further details.
Helmand intelligence chief, Brig. Gen. Nazar Ali Wahidi, confirmed the bombing in Sapyan area, saying two NDS workers were killed. Another two intelligence operatives and a dozen civilians were wounded, he added.
Gen. Wahidi said they had prior information about the attack, but could not prevent it. The injured included women and children.
Resident Ali Ahmad said a number of shops and houses in the vicinity were damaged by the powerful explosion. “Six members of my family were injured. The perimetre wall of my house collapsed and windowpanes were shattered.”
Officials at Bost and Emergency hospitals in Lashkargah said they had received two dead bodies and 16 injured people. The wounded were in stable condition, they added.
