Karzai asks Pakistan for joint war on terror

Days after the Taliban shot in head a teenage school student, Malala Yousafzai in Swat valley, Karzai issued the latest call in letters addressed to Pakistani political leaders and religious scholars.

The president sent the letters to President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Raja Parvez Ashraf, Pakistan Muslim League chief Mian Nawaz Sharif, former Jamaat-i-Islami head Qazi Hussain Ahmad and Tehrik-i-Insaf leader Imran Khan.

He also sought support from other Pakistani politicians, including Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, Mahmood Khan Achakzai, Asfandyar Wali Khan, Maulana Fazl Rahman, Samiul Haq, Afzal Khan, Aftab Ahmad Khan Sherpao, Sardar Attaullah Mengal, Mir Hasil Khan Bizenjo, Talal Bugti and Altaf Hussain. 

According to a statement from his office, Karzai wrote the attack on Malala proved that both nations were faced with a “dangerous enemy” that wanted to deprive their rising generations of education.

The people of Afghanistan, where such attacks had become a routine affair, could better realise the intensity of the assault on the Pakistani student and deemed it an attack on all Afghan girls.

“The voice raised against the tragic incident should not fall silent, with both countries jointly fighting terrorism and extremism to rescue our children from this cruelty,” the president concluded.
