5 police poisoned to death; rebels perish in clashes
LASHKARGAH (PAN): Seven militants were killed in separate security incidents in southern Helmand province, where policemen were poisoned to death, officials said on Friday.
The policemen, including their commander, were poisoned to death at a check-post Greshk district on Thursday night, an official told Pajhwok Afghan News.
Requesting not to be named, the source revealed the attackers also took away police weapons after the incident in the Sarband area of the district.
Col. Mohammad Ismail Hotak, coordination officer at the Helmand police headquarters, confirmed the incident. A delegation had been dispatched to the area for investigations, he added.
Another police officer, 1st Lt. Omar Jan Haqmal, said Afghan intelligence agents and foreign troops killed four fighters during an overnight operation in the Bagh area of Nad Ali district.
But a district council member, Abdul Haq Helmandwal, alleged the victims were civilians and not insurgents. Two of the dead were his cousins and the rest his co-villagers, he said, adding the young men had no links with rebels.
