KABUL): President Hamid Karzai inaugurated restoration of the mausoleum of former king Timor Shah, his office said on Saturday.

Damaged during decades of war, the tomb’s restoration was launched by the Ministry of Information and Culture with the cooperation of the Aga Khan Foundation (AKF).

Timor Shah, the son and successor of Ahmad Shah Durrani, the founder of modern Afghanistan, moved the country’s capital from Kandahar to Kabul in 1776.

Karzai praised Timor Shah as one of the great men of Afghan history.

“I am happy to remember Timor Shah on this occasion,” the president said, thanking Prince Karim Aga Khan for the restoration of the Bagh-i-Babar in Kabul and Qala-i Ikhtiaruddin in Herat and for implementing health and cultural projects in the country.

Information Minister Dr. Syed Makhdoom Rahim said the restoration will preserve the architectural masterpieces of the Timor Shah’s era.
