US policy on Afghan will not change under new president: Analysts

KABUL would not change even if Republican candidate Mitt Romney emerged as the winner in the forthcoming presidential poll.

Afghanistan Regional Studies Centre’s head Abdul Ghafoor Liwal said both the presidential candidates have same views about the world affairs, including Afghanistan.

“Afghans should not be optimistic over the change of president,” Liwal said, adding that US foreign policy would not alter even if a new president comes to power.

Political Science Faculty lecturer at Kabul University, Wader Safai, believes American people would support their foreign policy if it serves their overall national interests.  

He said Afghans would prefer Democrats to win the presidential race next month instead of Republicans.

Safai said Republicans preferred war when they were in power but democrats wanted to resolve the problems confronting Afghanistan.

Another political analyst, Mohammad Neman Dost, said the American foreign policy is very much driven towards their national interests.

He said: “American president is obliged to end or extend the war in Afghanistan until its serve the national interests.”

In a recent television debate in Florida, Mitt Romney and President Barak Obama agreed that US military mission in Afghanistan would conclude by the end of 2014.
