KABUL said Thursday that it welcomed the newly announced timetable for the 2014 Afghan presidential and provincial council elections.
“UNAMA reaffirms its commitment to support the organisation of the elections at the request of the Afghan authorities and institutions as mandated by the United Nations Security Council (UNSC),” a brief statement from the UN office, said on Thursday.
The Presidential Palace had also welcomed the dates announced by the IEC for the next presidential and provincial council elections.
On Wednesday, the IEC announced that the presidential and provincial elections were slated for 5th April, 2014.
IEC commissioner Fazl Ahmad Manawi had told reporters the presidential election results would be announced on 14th May 2014, while the outcome of the provincial council polls would be declared on 7th June 2014.
Manawi said if any presidential candidate failed to obtain more than 50 percent of the votes, a runoff election (second round) would be held on 22nd May, 2014.
