Militant leaders captured in Nangarhar, Logar

KABULinfo-icon (PANinfo-icon): Two insurgent leaders were detained in joint operations by Afghan and coalition forces in Kandahar and Logar provinces on Saturday, the International Security Assistance Force (ISAFinfo-icon) said.

The militant arrested in Kandahar was suspected of overseeing the emplacement and distribution of improvised explosives devices throughout the province, a statement from the alliance said

Afghan and coalition security forces seized 750 kilograms (1,650 pounds) of homemade explosives during an operation in Ghazni province.

A Haqqani networkinfo-icon leader, who allegedly oversaw operations and multiple attack cells, was arrested along with a number of suspected rebels in Logar province, the ISAF statement added.

In eastern Afghanistaninfo-icon, several fighters were held during a security operation in search of a Talibaninfo-icon leader in Nangarhar province. As the security personnel approached the Taliban leader’s suspected location, two armed insurgents attacked them with small-arms fire.

In return fire, the rebels were wounded and later evacuated to a coalition medical facility. During the operation, the security force seized several assault rifles, shotguns and large quantities of ammunition and gear.
