KABUL (PAN): Minister of Education Ghulam FarooqWardak on Tuesday opened the National Agricultural Education Centre (NAEC), a Dutch-funded project that trains Afghan teachers for the agricultural sector.

Wageningen University and Research (WUR) in the Netherlands is the implementing partner of the programme, which will contribute to a more productive agricultural sector by improving the level of education in agricultural high schools and institutes.

The Dutch embassy in Kabul said the centre would provide highly-qualified teachers with up-to-date knowledge and skills relevant to farmers, traders and processors of agricultural products, as well as consumers. It will also develop modern national curricula for agricultural high schools and institutes.

A statement from the embassy said the first group of students from all over Afghanistan, starting education at NAEC in April this year, are trained by Afghan teachers who – as part of the project – completed their Master degree at Wageningen University in the Netherlands.

Apart fromtechnical and practical knowledge, pedagogical training hasalso been part of their programme. The aim of the course is to prepare teachers to teach at the agricultural high schools.
