KABUL (PAN): An Afghan National Army (ANA) soldier was among 24 people killed in two separate incidents in central Kapisa and Maidan Wardak provinces, officials said on Monday.
In Kapisa, 20 armed insurgents and the soldier were killed during a clash in Tagab district on Sunday night, Governor Mehrabuddin Safi told Pajhwok Afghan News.
He said the clash was touched off by a Taliban attack on an ANA check-post. A key insurgent commander, Ghulam Rabbani, was among the dead. Two Afghan soldiers were also injured.
Resident Haji Mullah Mohammad said the firefight, which erupted in Rosak area, lasted two hours and a half. Without giving an exact figure, he said many fighters were killed.
In Maidan Wardak, three mine planters were killed when the explosives they were planting on a road went off prematurely in Syedabad district, said Shahidullah Shahid, the governor's spokesman.
He identified two of the men as Noor Rahman and Shamim, residents of Khalil village. The identity of the third militant was yet to be established, Shahid said. A civilian was injured in the incident.
