 FAIZABAD (PAN and security forces in the Worduj district of remoteb northern Badakhshan province, an official said on Friday. Each side claimed inflicting causalities on the other.

Police chief Sakhidad Haidari told Pajhwok Afghan News the firefight was triggered by a Taliban attack on a public order check-post on Thursday afternoon.

In a counterattack, several insurgents were killed, he said, adding specific casualty figures were not yet available. Two policemen were wounded in the gunbattle, he added.

A Taliban spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, acknowledged injuries to six attackers. He claimed the rebels captured the post, killed nine policemen and wounded five others.

According to Mujahid, the Taliban also seized a machine gun, one rocket-propelled grenade, a rifle and large quantity of ammunitions.
