ZARANJ /JALALABAD (PAN): Two suspects were detained with 45 kilograms of heroin near the Iranian border in the southwestern province of Nimroz, an official said on Saturday.

The drugs were seized on Friday evening from a car traveling from Zaranj to Abresham Bridge, the provincial police chief, Col. Mohammad Musa Rasuli, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

Two tonnes of drugs, including 1,600 kg of opium, had been seized during two weeks of counternarcotics operations in the province, he said.

Separately, three more people were detained with dozens of kilograms of drugs as a result of an operation in the eastern province of Nangarhar, bordering Pakistan’s tribal region of Khyber.

A man was held with 50 kg of opium he wanted to traffic in a Suzuki car from Achin district to the Abdulkhel bazaar, said the police spokesman, Hazrat Husain Mashriqiwal.

Meanwhile, 27 kg of opium, nine kg of heroin and a heroin-producing factory were destroyed during an operation by Afghan and the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in the Ghorak district of southern Kandahar province, a statement from the Ministry of Defence said.
