JALALABAD (PAN): Violence against women increased this year, compared with 2011, in eastern Nangarhar province, an official said on Tuesday.
Women’s Affair Director Anisa Imrani told Pajhwok Afghan News 70 cases of violence against women were registered in 2012, up from 60 reported last year.
She said with the passage of time, awareness and access to court had increased, and so had violence against women in Nangarhar. Anisa believed that many cases of force marriage, child marriage and elopement went unreported.
Religious scholars, tribal elders and NGOs are helping the department overcome the problem, she said.
Director of Afghan Integrated Capacity Development Organisation Malalai Shinwari said awareness could play an effective role in checking violence against females.PAJHWOK/Babrak Amirzada
