LASHKARGAH (PAN works is missing, says an official.

Haji Shah Mehmood Mir district chief told Pajhwok Afghan News that they are facing shortage of police personnel but with good cooperation they managed to improve security in the area.

Currently, 158 policemen are deployed in the district, an additional 100 policemen from Desho district are also serving here and two battalions of border police are stationed to curb border smuggling and cross-border militant activities.

Mir said that they have a professional police force but not well equipped as they should be. However, they have managed to stop militant activities and planting of mines had been decreased compared to last year.

“Police have started campaigns to destroy the poppy cultivation and 150 acres of land had been cleared,” added Mir.

Despite obtaining these achievements, the local government and donor countries failed to assist the district administration to promote public welfare projects, he added.

Since three years ago the district had been free from militant threats, but so far roads, schools, clinics and water dams had not been constructed, which had disappointed the people, he said.
