Union fears of Afghan journalists’ safety

KABUL) :  Afghan media rights group on Wednesday expressed concern of the rising violence against journalist and wanted the government to provide adequate safety for them to carry out their daily duties without fear.

Abdul Hameed Mubariz, the head of Afghan National Union of Journalist described these “violations as uncivilized” and urged senior officials to ensure safety of journalists.

Citing the case of Habib Rahman Ibrahimi, a local journalist who was arrested at midnight in his home by American forces and sending him to Bagram prison was clear violation.

Another case was the assault on Zabihullah Alam, a reporter of the Bakhter, state news Agency.

Alam was beaten up in his house compound by unknown men at night and robbed his money and mobile phone.

Khpal Wak Safi, head of the Afghanistan Independent Journalists Association, said during the past few years several reporters had been killed but their cases were forgotten and no action was taken against the culprits.

Sidiqullah Tawhidi, head of the NAI-Supporting Open Media in Afghanistan (NAI) organization, said that violence against journalists had increased compare to last year.

Mohammad Zahir, chief of criminal investigative department of 101 Asmayee zone police, said they have launched a search for those who attacked Alam.
