MAZAR-I-SHARIF (PAN projects in some districts of northern Balkh province are being hampered by security problems, an official said on Wednesday.

Provincial council head, Dr. Mohammad Afzal Hadid, told Pajhwok Afghan News that they were trying to oversee government activities in Balkh in the best interest of the people.

On the sidelines of a meeting with representatives of 14 district development councils, he said the gathering was aimed at reviewing the uplift schemes being executed in different areas.

Hadid said they were doing their bit to ensure evenhanded development of all districts, but their efforts were hindered in some by security problems in some areas.

Although the public representative did not name any district, Chamtal, Charbolak, Balkh and Sholgar are seen as restive towns over the past few years.

Akhtar Mohammad, a resident of Chamtal, said there was only one health clinic in the district that could not resolve people’s problems. He complained many schools were without buildings, despite a string of requests from area residents.

The situation would have improved if the government had paid consistent attention to public needs, believed Haji Salim Bai, a resident of Charbolak district.
