KABUL on Saturday asked President Hamid Karzai to introduce his nominees for heads of the Supreme Court and the Attorney General Office to lawmakers for a vote of confidence.
Last year, the lower house disqualified Attorney General Mohammad Ishaq Aloko after he failed to appear before the legislators despite being summoned. But the AG, who has already completed his term, continues to hold his office.
Speaker Abdul Rauf Ibrahimi said: “I once again remind Karzai on behalf of the house to introduce his picks for the attorney general, the chief justice and key members of the Supreme Court to Wolesi Jirga for a confidence vote.”
The president should respect national constitution and introduce candidates for the positions, the speaker remarked, stressing the need for filling the slots in line with the constitution.
“We have asked several times for the introduction of the nominees. Let’s reject the draft annual budget as a mark of protest…” said a lawmaker from Kabul, Ramazan Bashardost.
Under Article 64, the president has to appoint ministers, the attorney general, the central bank governor, intelligence chief, Afghanistan head and the chief justice after approval from the Wolesi Jirga.
