CHAGHCHARAN (PAN province.

Governor Syed Anwar Rahmati briefed the ministers —Ghulam Mujtaba Patang, Mohammad Asif Rahimi and Amirzai Sangin — on the security situation in the province, saying it had deteriorated due to the presence of armed insurgents. He said the Taliban held sway in five districts, where 146 illegal armed groups existed.

He urged the interior minister to increase the number of police in Ghor which borders two volatile provinces — Helmand and Farah. He said the province had long been a favourite route for drug smugglers to reach southern Afghanistan from the north.
