HERAT CITY (PAN): Residents of this western city of Herat on Thursday asked the government to lock down the provincial water and energy department for what they said failing to maintain an uninterrupted power supply to dwellers.

The rally of about 300 people came a day after the department announced it had resorted 24 hours electricity to the people after a technical problem halted the supply coming from neighbouring Turkmenistan.

“The life has come to a standstill in the city as no one can do business in the absence of power,” a protester, Hajji Tawakul, said.

Sakina Hussaini, a provincial council member, also joined the rally held on a cricket stadium. “Government employees work less and don’t know people’s problems,” the public representative said. She warned of continued protest rallies if the electricity issue was not addressed.

“The lack of power is a result of the lethargic approach towards their official obligations by government’s functionaries,” remarked Dr. Abdul Zahir Faizzada, the provincial legislative body chairman.

He asked the government to fire irresponsible officials from its departments and replace them honest and ambitious ones.
