WASHINGTON (PAN members on Friday staged rallies in various cities of the United States to protest the Obama administration’s failure to close the Guantanamo Bay prison in Cuba.
Hundreds of alleged terrorists, arrested by US troops in Afghanistan, have been imprisoned in the notorious detention facility since its establishment 11 years ago.
Human rights campaigners rallied in front of the White House in Washington on Friday when President Hamid Karzai and his US counterpart Barak Obama were giving a joint news conference.
Like Guantanamo inmates, the protestors wore orange-colour clothes and covered their faces and heads. They asked President Obama to keep his promises and close the jail.
Two years ago, Obama had said he would shut the prison, but the commitment is yet to be honoured. Irking rights defenders and civil society leaders.
Similar rallies were staged in Miami, Chicago, Dallas and Los Angeles.
