124 projects to be executed in Herat
HERAT CITY (PAN): Nearly 124 projects worth $35 million (1.8 billion afghanis) would be implemented during the next Afghan calendar year in western Herat province, an official said on Thursday.
Water supply and irrigation schemes, construction of healthcare centres and schools are among the main projects, the governor's acting spokesman, Mohammad Shoaib Masumi, told Pajhwok Afghan News.
He said most of the projects would be executed in remote areas of the province. Funds for the schemes, with a one-year timescale, will be provided by the government and the international community.
Mohammad Arif, a resident of Rabat Sangi district, complained: "Water drawn from wells in our area is not drinkable. As a result, I have to fetch potable water on a motorbike or donkey from a karez located five kilometres from our house."
He said since the irrigation system in the district had been damaged, growers were forced to store rainwater. He added only four of the 100 schools in Rabat Sangi had buildings, asking the authorities to resolve the problem.
