Pakistan offers stipends to curb insurgency

KABUL, a media report said on Thursday.

The offer came at a high-level meeting, chaired by Balochistan Governor Nawab Zulfiqar Ali Magsi and attended by top bureaucrats, army, police and paramilitary officials, an influential Pakistani newspaper reported.  

According to Dawn, the meeting reviewed the overall security situation in the province and decided to pay compensation by the end of the current month to relatives of victims of terrorist attacks in Quetta on January 10.

More than 100 people, most of them from the minority Hazara community, were killed in the bombings that touched off nationwide protests. As a result, the provincial government was suspended and governor’s rule imposed in Balochistan.

The newspaper quoted unnamed officials as promising the welfare of surrendering insurgents. The authorities were willing to give stipends to Dera Bugti residents who renounced militancy.
