EU deeply concerned at detainee abuse

KABUL, on Sunday called torture one the most serious violations of human rights and dignity.

While welcoming the UN’s efforts to monitor detention centres, the EU asked all parties concerned to guarantee prisoners’ fundamental rights, eradicate all forms of torture and adhere to relevant international norms.

In a statement, EU Special Representative to Afghanistan Vygaudas Ušackas noted UNAMA’s finding that mistreatment of detainees was not a policy of the Afghan government and hailed the measures already taken by the authorities to end the abusive practices.

He urged the Afghan authorities to put in place all needed additional corrective measures as a result of the findings of the UN report and to bring the perpetrators of such acts to justice.

“The EU also welcomes the measures taken by ISAF to prevent mistreatment in Afghan detention facilities, including the suspension of transfers of detainees to certain detention centres,” the statement added.
