Karzai insists on full control of Bagram prison
By Zarghona Salehi Jan 22, 2013 - 12:59KABUL (PAN): President Karzai has called for implementation of the agreements he reached with the Obama administration during his recent visit to Washington.
He particularly stressed the complete transfer of Bagram prison to Afghan authorities, warning any delay could lead to suspicion among his people.
At a meeting late on Monday with David Pearce, the acting special representative of the US for Afghanistan and Pakistan, the president described his Washington trip as highly productive.
On the Qatar office, Karzai reiterated his government’s position: “The Taliban who take part in the peace negotiations must prove their credibility and hold verifiable authosiation of their leadership.”
There must be a clear and written understanding among Afghanistan, the US and Qatar on the opening of the office and follow-up arrangements, Karzai was quoted as saying in a statement from his office.
He made it clear only the High Peace Council could represent the people of Afghanistan at such talks, as it was authorised by the Peace Jirga and created by the will of the people.
