JALALABAD (PAN): Two river embankment projects were completed on the outskirts of Mehtarlam, the capital of eastern Laghman province, on Wednesday, an official said.

The levees in Deh Ziyarat and Miankhelkas areas were built to prevent the Alishang River from overflowing, the governor’s spokesman said.

Sarhadi Zwak said the two projects, a joint venture of the World, cost $240,000 and took five months to complete. The 200 and 250 metre-long walls would help keep arable lands protected from soil erosion, the official said.

A Ziyarat resident Fakharullah said the river became flooded as rainy season began, threatening thousands of homes and farms nearby. He said the embankment would hold the soil and keep it from being washed away.
