KABUL to pave the ground for an accelerated withdrawal of US troops before the 2014 deadline.

In his first appearance before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, which he formerly headed, Kerry promised the US counter-terrorism mission in Afghanistan would continue beyond the pullout of foreign soldiers.

Known for his diplomatic skills, the senior legislator has remained engaged with Afghanistan as President Barack Obama’s emissary on certain issues, particularly after the previous presidential election that saw heightened tension between the allies.

While acknowledging Islamabad’s role in the war on terrorism, Kerry informed the lawmakers the US had “a lot of interests” in its relationship, including the use of Pakistani roads for critical supplies to American troops in Afghanistan.
