HERAT CITY (PAN):  With the hanging of a girl, the number of females killed in western Herat province has reached 45 since Mar. 21, 2012, officials said on Saturday.

An 18-year-old girl was found hanged in the Sar Asyab area of Injil district, the deputy spokesman for police, Syed Ahmad Mohammadi, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

The newly-engaged girl’s family said she had committed suicide inside her house. Police had launched an investigation to determine whether she had committed suicide or killed by someone, he added.

Since Mar. 21, 2012, the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission (AIHRC) had registered deaths of 45 females in the province, said Abdul Qadir Rahimi, the watchdog’s head for Herat.

As many as 27 girls were killed in 50 incidents of self-emollition, 24 due to family disputes and violence in the province, he concluded.
