JALALABAD (PAN): At least two armed insurgents were killed and several others were wounded during a fierce fire-exchange with police in wee hours of Tuesday in the Hesarak district of eastern Nangarhar province, an official said.
The battle began at around 8am in the Lewani Qabr area after a group of armed rebels attacked two police posts, Nangarhar police spokesman Hazrat Hussain Mashriqwal told Pajhwok Afghan News.
The two attackers were killed and many were injured when the police retaliated, the official said, claiming the police personnel stayed unhurt.
However, Mashriqwal was unable to give figures for those injured in the clash that came two days after the Ministry of Interior said it had approved the deployment of NATO-backed Local Police Force (LPF) to 14 Nangarhar’s districts along the Pakistani border.
After the attack, police launched a search operation in the area, destroying five militant hideouts, according Mashriqwal, who said a child was slightly injured in the crossfire. The dead bodies of the attackers were later taken away by their surviving comrades from the scene, he concluded.
