JALALABAD (PAN): At least two armed insurgents were killed and several others wounded during a fierce fire exchange with police in the wee hours of Tuesday in the Hesarak district of eastern Nangarhar province, an official said.
The battle erupted at around 8am in Lewani Qabr area after a group of armed rebels stormed two police posts, Nangarhar police spokesman Hazrat Hussain Mashriqwal told Pajhwok Afghan News.
Two of the attackers were killed and as many injured when police returned fire, the official said, claiming the security personnel stayed unhurt.
However, Mashriqwal was unable to give figures for those injured in the clash that came two days after the Ministry of Interior said it had approved the deployment of the NATO-backed local police force to 14 Nangarhar’s districts.
After the attack, police launched a search operation in the area, destroying five militant hideouts, according Mashriqwal, who said a child was slightly injured in the crossfire. The bodies of the attackers were later taken away by their comrades, he concluded.
