GHAZNI CITY (PAN): A 20-year-old woman drank acid in an attempt to commit suicide after her spouse was killed during a group suicide attack in the capital of southern Ghazni province three days ago, doctors and family said on Tuesday.

An unconscious Gul Ghutai was brought to the civil hospital after the killing of her spouse Juma Khan in a terrorist attack in Jaghtu district, the hospital director, Dr. Baz Mohammad Himmat, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

“The death of her husband caused her a mental breakdown. She opted to drink acid to end it all,” said the doctor, who added the woman was recovering after she had her stomach washed. “She would feel better,” Himmat added.

Ghutai’s brother, Mohammad Azeem, said her sister drank acid when her husband was to be buried. “She had emptied the acid from a car battery,” her brother said, adding Ghutai had married three months back.

The group suicide attack left Ghutai’s husband, his mother and a policeman dead and nearly a dozen others injured — all civilians.
