HERAT CITY (PAN): Fifteen insurgents were killed and seven more were detained during an ongoing Afghan military operation codenamed “Naveed” in two western provinces, officials said on Sunday.
The offensive by Afghan National Army troops began three days ago simultaneously in Herat and Farah provinces. Seven militants were killed in the Shindand district (Herat) and eight in the Bakwa district (Farah), said Col. Najibullah Najibi, a spokesman for ANA’s 207th Zafar Military Corps. Another seven rebels were arrested and 10 Kalashnikovs were seized, he said.
A provincial council member and resident of the Shindand district, Tor Mohammad Zarifi, confirmed the operation was underway in the town. Civilians suffered no casualties, he said.
The public representative said two ANA soldiers were wounded when their vehicle hit a roadside bomb, a claim confirmed by Najibi.
