LASHKARGAH (PAN): Governor Mohammad Naeem on Wednesday inaugurated a spring tree-plantation drive aimed at growing this year 550 ornamental grass nurseries, including 350 in Lashkargah, the capital of southern Helmand province.

Naeem, who planted a ornamental tree to kick off the campaign, said ornamental trees were being delivered free of cost to the municipality and other government departments through the agriculture department in order to see “a decorated Lashkargah.”

The governor urged Lashkargah dwellers to look-after trees newly planted during the campaign financially supported by the Roots of Peace, a leading perennial horticulture expert in Afghanistan, hoping new saplings would help make the city greener and beautified.

Agriculture Director Roohullah Rawan told Pajhwok Afghan News his department had received 135,000 ornamental and fruit-bearing saplings this year from various nongovernmental organisations (NGOs), including the Roots of Peace.

Rawan, who offered at lowered rate saplings to NGOs and ordinary people, said 350 nurseries would be established in Lashkargah and 200 in the Naad Ali district  as part of the drive.
