KABUL): An Afghan NGO on Wednesday alleged huge contracts were being awarded to the individuals and firms having links with high-ranking government officials.

Roohullah Ahmadzai, a spokesman for Harakat NGO, told Pajhwok Afghan News the private sector had made significant progress over the past decade.

The authorities had been able to lure investments to transport, communications and media sectors, he said. However, he claimed entrepreneurs remained hesitant to invest in some sectors.

A certain group with little experience in investment had been able to win massive contracts over the last decade, he alleged, “Some government officials have created an exploitative and monopolistic system that is damaging businesses in Afghanistan.”

The government had failed to scotch rumours about an economic crisis in the post-2014 Afghanistan, said Ahmadzai, who urged the international community to maintain an economic presence in the country beyond the withdrawal of NATO-led troops.
