KABUL’s northwestern city of Peshawar, the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, on Monday.

At least two blasts and gunfire were heard after the insurgents, wearing paramilitary uniforms, stormed the high-security office on Bara road in the cantonment area at about 9am, Pakistani media reported. A number of people were wounded.

Political Agent Mutahirzeb Khan was in a meeting with tribal elders at the time of the assault, DawnNews quoted a politician as saying. Niaz Ahmad Khan told the channel:  “We were holding a meeting when gunfire started inside the office. Then there was a loud blast, and followed by heavy fire.”

Officials asked the participants to take shelter inside the sprawling compound, added Khan, who claimed seeing two bodies and some injured people lying on the ground. Army personnel rushed to the site and joined the operation against the attackers.

The media cell at the Lady reading Hospital confirmed receiving five bodies.

Local journalist Sudher Afridi said the assailants, who wore Levies uniforms, detonated hand grenades at the entrance to force their way into the compound. Three civilians were killed in the ensuing gunfire, he said. Two of the attackers were shot dead and as many blew themselves up.
