MAIMANA (PAN and children, an elder and officials said on Monday.

The incident in Qaisar district involved dozens of motorcyclists who attacked 200 families of the tribe near the Turkmenistan border on Sunday night, tribal elder Mohammad Zarif told Pajhwok Afghan News.

He said the assailants fired rockets at their homes, killing two men and injuring two women and as many children. The families had moved from Chalgazi area to the border region to find meadows for their cattle.  The elder said the families were attacked because they were pro-government.

District chief, Abdul Jamil Siddiqui, said the attack occurred 80 kilometres from the town.

A border police official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said a large group of Taliban carried out the assault that involved their leaders Maulvi Akram, Mullah Fatah, Mullah Yaqub, Mullah Siddiq, Mullah Noorkai Baranzai and Mullah Hashim.
