KANDAHAR CITY (PAN): Security forces seized a large quality of explosives and narcotics, arresting 16 suspected criminals over the past one week in southern Kandahar province, police said on Thursday.
Several terrorist attacks had been foiled during the week that saw eight insurgents were killed and 69 improvised explosive devices (IEDs), 35 hand grenades seized and defused, Security Chief Col. Rahmatullah Atrafi told reporters at the Governor’s House.
He said 418 kg of explosives materials were confiscated during security operations that resulted in the seizure of 31 rocket shells, four Kalashnikovs, as many pistols, two light arms, two magazines and ammunitions.
The 16 suspects had been arrested on charges of murder, theft and other crimes. Four men were captured for smuggling about 610kg of hashish, 50kg of opium and 11kg of heroin.
