KUNDUZ (PAN): A member of the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan (IMU) was detained during an operation by security forces in northern Kunduz province, an official said on Saturday.

Mohammad Yaqub, who belongs to Kazakhstan, was captured in the Imam Sahib district of the province, police spokesman, Syed Sarwar Hussaini, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

He said one mobile phone, maps of government installations and other sensitive documents were seized from the IMU militants. However, the official did not elaborate.

The 30-year-old broke his cell phone while being searched by police, Hussaini said, adding security forces had long been chasing the man.

Meanwhile, some residents of the provincial capital asked the government to take effective measures to prevent foreign insurgents’ infiltration into the province.

Although activities of foreign rebels had reduced to some extent, the government should do more to stabilise the province, said Mohammad Rassoul, a dweller of Kunduz City.
