KABUL-led international troops to Afghan security forces is progressing well, a renowned British military expert said Monday.
Neighbouring powers wanted Afghanistan to be a modern country capable of looking after itself, said Brig. (R) Ben Barry, a senior fellow for land warfare at the London-based International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS).
According to the Indian news agency IANS, he told reporters in New Delhi that presidential elections in Afghanistan would be crucial to the situation in post-2014 Afghanistan.
In response to a query about a recent Delhi-Beijing agreement to initiate a dialogue on Afghanistan, Barry said none of the powers in the region wanted instability.
He said the withdrawal of NATO forces was still 20 months away, and Afghan forces needed a lot in terms of capacity building. “Transition of security to Afghan national forces is going on well.”
