LASHKARGAH (PAN): Thirty-nine government departments owe 77 million afghanis in unpaid electricity bills to the power utility in southern Helmand province, a senior official said on Tuesday.

Afghanistan Breshna Shirkat chief Mirwais Alami told a press conference in Lashkargah that electricity-related problems in the province could be resolved if the defaulting entities paid the arrears. However, he did not name any department.

Alami also said the Kajaki dam project would be given into Afghanistan’s control over the next three months, hoping the move would help cut costs by 50 percent and intensify reconstruction efforts.

He said another dam in the Greskhk district was under construction and it would cost $75 million to complete.

He also hinted at launching work on extending transmission lines to Musa Qala district at a cost of 22 million afghanis.

Energy Department Director Faizullah said he briefed Alami on electricity-related problems in Helmand and had won a promise from him to make efforts for their resolution.
