KABUL for 13 years, has been granted Afghan citizenship, an official of the Administrative Affairs Office at the Presidential Palace said on Tuesday.
The trio’s applications for Afghanistan’s nationalities had been approved by the Council of Ministers, a spokesman for the office, Rafi Firdous, told Pajhwok Afghan News.
Currently living in Kabul, the new Afghan citizens of Iranian origin are Saadi Khaledi, his spouse Tayeba Nasri and mother Khasia Azizi.
Saadi Khaledi said: “We came to Herat from the Pawa Kurdistan city of Iran 13 years ago due to our problems with the Iranian government. We were given Afghan nationality during Taliban’s rule.”
But after the collapse of the Taliban regime, he said they were told their citizenship was not legal. “Five years ago, we came to Kabul and appealed for ID cards,” he added.
A week ago, the Ministry of Justice told them in the presence of representatives from the National Directorate of Security and the population department that their asylum applications had been granted and they had been awarded Afghan citizenship.
