KABUL.

A spokesman for the Foreign Office in Kabul noted that Maulana Tahir Ashrafi had denied making such a statement. Statements from private individuals did not reflect the government’s views, he added.

“Pakistan and the Ulema of this country have repeatedly condemned suicide attacks and consider them repugnant to the teachings of our glorious religion,” the spokesman said.

On Sunday, the scholar told Pajhwok Afghan News he had been quoted out of context by some media outlets. He affirmed his strong aversion to civilian deaths in such attacks.

“I’ve never supported suicide attacks that cause civilian casualties in Afghanistan,” Ashrafi said, insisting that harming civilians — in Afghanistan or elsewhere — was unacceptable.
